The route below was not quite what was ridden due to some road closures.

Cost: $70.00 Includes single 20lb bag transport, water/snack stop at Peach Tree, dinner/drinks in Santa Maria and  snack/food/drinks at finish.

Registration: closes Thursday, April 7 at midnight

Start Location: San Jose South
End Location: Oxnard

Description:

Leaves south  San Jose  before dawn.  Riders are quickly out of South San Jose heading for Morgan Hill.  Then cross  through Gilroy and for first control at Hollister on the way to Airline Rd. Enjoy a long low traffic ride past Pinnacles National Park and then a  water/snack stop  at Peachtree Rd.  After 40 more quiet miles, arrive in civilization in Paso Robles. Pass over the coast range via Hwy 46 to Cambria and then south to Morro Bay. Continue by San Luis Obispo to the overnight stop in Santa Maria , which is the overnight control.

Leave Santa Maria around dawn, and follow the whole length of rural Foxen Canyon.  To get to Gaviota – head to Solvang, and take Alisal Road to Nojoqui Summit, where riders join Hwy 101 (generally 8-10′ shoulder) to travel to Goleta and Santa Barbara along the Pacific Ocean.

Goleta bike paths are used, and the route crosses the mesa, to reach Cliff Rd and the Lazy Acres Market above Santa Barbara.   From there, the path to Ventura is well known by local riders. Travel the multi-million dollar beachfront bike path from Bates Rd to Seacliff, instead of riding the highway .  Finally, Wooley Rd goes to the finish in Oxnard.

Registration: It is an open registration but the priority for the first two weeks will be given to riders who had previously signed up on the interest list. That list is currently a little less than 40 people so if you expressed interest and register by March 5th then you will be on the ride. If your name is not on the interest list you can still register and assuming there is space you will be placed on the ride, once we hit 40 registered participants you will be placed on the waitlist. I will limit the number of slots (registered + waitlist) to 60 to start with. For folks on the waitlist you can cancel at any time and I will refund you registration less the PayPal fees(approx. $3).

Drop Bags: To accommodate this many riders we will be strict on the drop bag. One drop bag per person, max weight is 20lbs, and no bigger than a small backpack. We will have a scale so if it’s over 20lbs or too large we will not be transporting it. All bags need to be clearly labeled and well contained (i.e. no random items like shoes tied to the outside).

Support: We will be doing some amount of support on the course but it may be limited depending on how many volunteers we get. Although this can be ridden as a straight through 600k it’s not recommend as there will be no overnight support south of Santa Maria and bags will not be available in Oxnard until early afternoon on Sunday.

RUSA Rules for RidersLights and reflective gear are required for all riders at the start, at night, and during poor visibility conditions (fog/rain).  These must be kept with you on the bike during the ride.  No rider may use personal sag support between controls.  Riders not following these rules will be disqualified.

Refunds: Registration may be canceled with only a $10 penalty up to April 1. From April 1 to April 15, there is a 50% penalty unless you are replaced by someone on the waitlist then it’s $10. No Registration changes or refunds after April 15 at midnight, one week before the ride.

You can book through the Marriot site via this link Book your group rate for San Luis Obispo Randonneurs . The group rate is for 7 Studios and 8 One bedrooms and is available until March 21st. The hotel can be reached from from downtown San Jose by the Blue Line which also has a large parking lot close to the start hotel.
Other hotels nearby – Two Extended Stays right next to the Residence Inn and a Wyndham Garden.
You do not need to stay at the start hotel but that is where the start and bag pickup will be.

Overnight Hotel
Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Santa Maria
Address: 2061 Roemer Ct, Santa Maria, CA 93454
Phone: (805) 925-8500

Group Rate is $130 + Tax for one bed, and $145 + Tax for two beds. You need to call the hotel to book and reference the San Luis Obispo Randonneurs to get the group rate, the rate is for 3 one bed rooms and 7 two bed rooms as that is the most I could get without having to do all the payments myself. I’m hoping that they don’t actually enforce a limit but we will see.

Again you don’t need to stay at the Fairfield but it is where you will be able to get your bag and where you will need to drop in off on Sunday morning  by 7:00AM.

Vickie has kindly volunteered to run the overnight control in Santa Maria so we will have hot food on Saturday night. I’ve arranged for a 6:30 breakfast which was the earliest they could go given when their staff arrives.

Finish: The current plan is not to finish at a hotel as I need to be back in SLO Sunday night. Current plan for the finish is the  Costco parking lot in Oxnard

The ride fee does not include sleeping accommodations, please make reservations as you see fit at the event hotels above, which will have baggage service.  We can’t pick up/ drop off  elsewhere in Santa Maria, though you are free to stay in other hotels (returning your drop bag by 0700)

please use Google Group SLORando for general questions or email SLO RBA
